How to budget for a weekend resort trip down South without maxing out your credit card

A weekend at a South coast resort is easy to book and easy to overspend on. Here is how to plan it so the bill is paid before you even pack.

  1. 1

Set one number for the whole trip

Add up transport, rooms, food and activities, then add 10% for surprises. An example for two people, two nights: rooms Rs. 70,000, fuel and tolls Rs. 15,000, food Rs. 20,000, activities Rs. 10,000, buffer Rs. 11,500. Total: Rs. 126,500.

  2. 2

Check card offers before you book

Banks often run hotel and travel discounts, especially for weekend stays. Look at the live travel offers before you pay, and book with the card that has the deal.

  3. 3

Save for it in a separate account

Divide the total by the months until the trip. Rs. 126,500 over 6 months is about Rs. 21,000 a month. Put it aside on payday so it is not spent by accident.

  4. 4

Pay the card in full when the bill comes

Using a card for the booking is fine, and often safer. Paying only the minimum is not: card interest on what is left can cost more than the discount you got.

Key takeaways

  • Decide the total first, then book.
  • Use a card offer, but pay the bill in full.
  • Save a fixed amount each payday until the trip.
